Students at Laurus Ryecroft School are celebrating a sweet achievement with this year’s successful honey harvest from the school’s on-site beehives. The initiative, part of the school’s commitment to environmental education and sustainability, has produced over 400 small jars of honey while teaching valuable lessons about ecology and agriculture.

“This harvest represents months of careful management and learning about the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem.” says Ciaran Ellis, Curriculum Leader of Design and Technology.

The student beekeeping club, under the guidance of Mrs Jones (Queen Bee), has maintained several hives throughout the academic year. Students learned about bee biology, colony management, and sustainable agriculture practices.

The harvested honey will be sold using parent pay at the school and used in the school food lessons with KS4, with proceeds supporting the continuation of the beekeeping program.

This is the second year of Beekeeping at Laurus Ryecroft, having been donated their first hive by Stockport Beekeeping Association. We hope to continue this in the coming years offering this experience to as many willing students as possible.
