Young Carers

Young Carers

Laurus Ryecroft is committed to helping students who help care for and support a member of their family.

Young carers are responsible for emotional, practical or physical care for a parent, sibling or other family member who has a physical disability, mental health issue or substance misuse issue. The 2011 Census statistics revealed that there are just over 166,000 young carers in England, but research reveals that this is just the tip of the iceberg. The true figure could be closer to 800,000 young carers in England, equivalent to one in five secondary aged school children.

We appreciate that there are many factors that may impact on Young Carers, and we do our best to meet their needs in school.

When a young person helps to look after someone in their family, they may need a little extra support to help them get the most out of school. We have been working to raise awareness throughout Laurus Ryecroft of the particular needs that Young Carers may have.

In this way, we aim to provide a safe and supportive environment for those students who may have more responsibility at home than their peers.

We encourage parent(s)/carer(s) to let us know if their child is a Young Carer.
