We were pleased to welcome BP&R Magazine to Laurus Ryecroft as part of their feature on the innovative work taking place in our Design and Technology (D&T) department.

Editor Giulia Daniele visited the school to explore our ongoing polymer project, speak with students and staff, and see how hands‑on learning is helping students make clear links between classroom knowledge and real‑world careers.

The resulting feature, published on Interplas Insights and in the latest issue of British Plastics & Rubber (BP&R), highlights the scale and ambition of a project that has developed significantly over the past 18 months.

Working with prea Ltd, and supported by Wells Performance Materials, the Manchester Polymer Group, CR Clarke, AEM Plastics and Hubron, 40 students have gained direct experience of materials and processes rarely available in schools.

With equipment donated or loaned by industry partners, students have designed and manufactured their own products using an injection moulder, 3D‑printed moulds and recycled HDPE bottle tops processed on site. They have also explored how plastic bottles can be converted into filament for 3D printing, giving them a clear understanding of the full recycling journey.

This practical experience has strengthened students’ understanding of sustainability, material choices and modern manufacturing.

Many have discovered new interests in engineering and product design, while others have developed a deeper awareness of the environmental impact of everyday materials.

The article was featured in the latest issue of the BP&R Magazine.

The journalist’s visit reflects growing interest in the project and highlights the value of strong partnerships between schools and industry.

With national pressures on D&T provision, collaborative projects of this kind are increasingly important, offering students opportunities that extend well beyond the classroom.

Our D&T team is keen to build on this success by exploring further materials‑based projects in the future.

We welcome opportunities to work with businesses who can enrich our students’ learning, whether by providing equipment, sharing specialist materials or speaking to students about careers in the sector. Please get in touch if you would like to collaborate.
