On Wednesday 25th May, students from Year 10 at Laurus Ryecroft had the opportunity to visit the University of Manchester. The visit was part of a campaign to support students who will be the first in their family to study at degree-level.

The idea of being the first person in your family to attend university can feel very daunting. You might feel more pressure to succeed, or unsure of who to turn to for advice about what to expect.

Visits like these can help first-generation students feel more at ease about going to university, providing them with support and giving them a taste of university life.

We are keen to ensure that all of our students have access to a range of information, including what the experience of university is like, so that no one is at a disadvantage.

On the day of the trip, students heard from university lecturers on enlightening subjects such as Philosophy, Mathematics and Psychology. The students met current University Ambassadors and had a full tour of the city-centre campus.

As our Year 10s begin to think about their next steps and the future beyond, we hope that this event offered them some real food for thought!
